This accessory allows a direct current (DC) voltage of up to 35 V to be applied across the twin-disc contact, facilitating studies of how electrical potentials influence contact friction, and lubrication behaviours. Continuous measurements of the voltage across and the current through the contact are recorded throughout testing.

Full control over the EC functionality allows the user to customise which steps in the profile has a potential across the contact as well as varying the polarity of the two disc specimens. A resistor in series with the contact can be chosen and switched in automatically from a selection of resistors to limit the current through the contact.
An integrated oscilloscope measures voltage across and current through the contact at high sampling frequencies (down to the nanosecond range). These signals can be monitored in real-time during the test. The measured values provide information about the electrical resistance at the contact, which is influenced by surface interactions and the conductive properties of the lubricant.
This setup is designed for electrified tribology studies, which are relevant to applications in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and similar systems involving current-carrying contacts.
The EC module can be used under the full range of HSD conditions, including variable sliding and rolling conditions, up to 90 N normal load, and at controlled temperatures. Additional cooling options are available for sub-ambient temperature operation and faster temperature control.
We also offer an AC option for the HSD-EC. This module extends the capability of the HSD-EC by enabling alternating current (AC) signals or waveform input. It includes a waveform amplifier and upgraded software features that allow control of a function generator.
