PCS Instruments: Still Setting the Standard
In celebration of World Standards Day, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what standards mean to us at PCS Instruments and how they can help to drive excellence in your research and development. For over three decades, PCS Instruments has not only been a leader in tribology testing but actively shaping them to set a higher benchmark for quality and dependable results to drive your research forward.
Our mission is straightforward: to empower you with the tools that deliver accurate, trustworthy results every time. Whether you’re conducting research in an academic institution or leading industrial advances, you can rely on PCS to be your partner in achieving tribological excellence. This is our story of why we continue to set the standard.
The Power of Standards
World Standards Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it represents a global acknowledgment of the importance of standards in ensuring quality, safety, and innovation across industries. As highlighted by the International Organisation for Standardisation,
‘Each year on 14 October, the members of the IEC, ISO, and ITU celebrate World Standards Day, which is a means of paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as International Standards’ [1].
At PCS Instruments, standards are woven into the very fabric of our work. They’re not just checkboxes to tick, they are a foundation that guarantees reliability, consistency and confidence in your testing.
Our Standards
At PCS Instruments, we’re not merely participants in the world of standards; we’re active contributors. Our team collaborates with leading industry bodies to develop and refine tribology standards that shape the future of testing methodologies. Here are some key standards that form the cornerstone of our work:
- ISO 12156 (HFRR Lubricity Test): This standard evaluates the lubricity of fuels, ensuring efficient performance and reducing wear in diesel engines. By adhering to ISO 12156, our customers can confidently assess fuel quality, contributing to engine longevity and optimal performance.
- ASTM D6079 (Fuel Lubricity Test): Standard Test Method for Evaluating Lubricity of Diesel Fuels by the High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR). By using equipment that meets ASTM D6079, our customers can guarantee the lubricity of their fuels, thereby preventing costly failures and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- ASTM D7688: Standard Test Method for Evaluating Lubricity of Diesel Fuels by the High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) by Visual Observation. This method allows for a visual assessment of lubricity in diesel fuels, providing an additional layer of verification that complements the quantitative results from other methods, ensuring the reliability and performance of diesel fuel.
- ASTM D5001: Standard Test Method for Measurement of Lubricity of Aviation Turbine Fuels by the Ball-on-Cylinder Lubricity Evaluator (BOCLE). This standard specifically targets aviation fuels, allowing for precise measurement of lubricity, which is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aircraft engines.
These standards are integral to fuel quality and performance in both diesel and aviation applications, aligning with industry practices. Our instruments are meticulously engineered to uphold these standards, showcasing our dedication to advancing tribology testing.
Our Instruments with Standards
- HFRR – The PCS HFRR is the industry leading instrument for analysing diesel fuel lubricity. PCS are the original manufacturers of the HFRR instrument and are the only instrument supplier specified on the following test methods: ISO 12156, ASTM D6079, ASTM D7688. With over 30 years of development experience and continual design, quality, and user experience improvements, we remain at the forefront of the market.
- ABS – The ABS is a microprocessor-controlled Ball-on-Cylinder wear test system which provides a fast, repeatable assessment of the performance of jet fuels that fully conforms to the ASTM D5001 test method for “Measurement of Lubricity of Aviation Turbine Fuels by the Ball-on-Cylinder Lubricity Evaluator”.
