The Next-Generation HFRR

PCS Instruments are continuing our tradition of setting the standard in diesel fuel lubricity testing with the HFRR, the only instrument globally recognised by ISO 12156, ASTM D6079, and ASTM D7688 standards. The HFRR’s advanced environmental chamber, featuring an active climate control system, and an advanced humidity cabinet that eliminates the need for a salt bath. These innovations reinforce the HFRR’s position as the industry leader in diesel fuel lubricity testing.

This next-generation HFRR maintains the precision and consistency PCS Instruments is known for, with new features enhancing user experience and functionality. It includes an integrated touch screen display with an intuitive, user-friendly interface that boosts productivity. The report customisation and automation capabilities simplify LIMS integration, while full backward compatibility means the HFRR works with existing spares and accessories. An optional QR code scanner simplifies data input, and the fully enclosed active environmental conditioning chamber precisely controls and maintains temperature and humidity even under harsh conditions.

Easy-to-configure user profiles improve testing and calibration traceability – making audits easier – while the modern ergonomic design features an RGB LED illuminated stainless steel test chamber and a double-glazed chamber door, which slides into an integrated pocket in the side of the chamber when not in use. The updated software tracks individual users and provides admin control over calibration access. The compact size and integrated controller eliminate the need for a separate PC, monitor, keyboard, and mouse, conserving valuable bench space without compromising performance. Additionally, an optional QR code reader automates test information input, and the HFRR is compatible with HFRR microscopes, wear scar cameras, and existing accessories, as well as gasoline testing.

Quality-of-life features include a wipe-clean stainless-steel interior, visual and audio cues for test completion, and a unique self-diagnostic function to identify potential issues, improving maintenance efficiency and reducing downtime.

Tom Welham, R&D Manager at PCS Instruments, commented on the HFRR: “The HFRR is a precise and reliable instrument for the measurement of diesel fuel lubricity, trusted by our customers for decades. The hugely improved environmental control system uses only water to control humidity in the test chamber to the tight limits required by the latest standards. We’ve really focussed on optimising the user experience with the software; it now uses a highly intuitive touch interface for all functions of the instrument. The new environmental chamber saves valuable bench space and includes many new ergonomic features to make it a pleasure to work on.”

PCS Instruments CEO Steven Horder had this to say of the HFRR: “The PCS HFRR is the trusted cornerstone of many professional labs around the world, relied upon by many customers supporting their research to create the best new products.  The HFRR meets the critical standards and is backed up by our excellent team. At PCS, we are continuing our focus on developing great products to support all of the varied industries we work with.”
